Teaser Tuesday

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted byMizB of Should Be Reading and it asks us to...

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn't give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
Here's my teaser this week:

I SMACK into him as if shoved from behind.  He doesn't budge, not an inch.  Just holds my shoulders and waits.

Not sure yet but will be picking one later today or tomorrow
11-22-63 Stephen King ( Yes I am re reading this on audiobook this time. It's all Sheila's fault really after her glowing review of it.) 5 hours left until I'm done. Course I only listen like 20 min a day so still a bit until I'm finished.

Books to Finish This week

Again with another lazy weekend. Dyed my hair, went out with friends, played online game with friends and worked on getting our DVR cleaned off. Pretty unproductive weekend but relaxing none the less.

The Immortal Rules Blood of Eden - A Review

The Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden) - Julie Kagawa (Netgalley)

 Synopsis:

In a future world, Vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity. Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.

Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them. The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked—and given the ultimate choice. Die… or become one of the monsters.

Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.

Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend—a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.

But it isn't easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what—and who—is worth dying for.

 My Thoughts:

I became a fan of Julie when I read her Iron Fey series so I had to read this one even though I'm a bit wore out of Vampire books. Man I was not disappointed at all! Julie gave me Vampires. Real honest to goodness, bloodsucking, vicious vampires. Yet she still managed to make me not hate them. I acutally feel sorry for some of them. It's amazing how that worked out.

Allison is a fantastic character. Growing up in the Fringe hating Vampires and everything they stood for. Until that fateful night she had to make the choice, Die or become one of them. Watching Allison struggle with her new life was hard at times. I wanted to gather in my arms and tell her it would be alright. I was cheering her along while every time she let her humanity take over her blood lust. Kanin, Allison's sire is a character I hope to get to know more about. He could've killed her twice to be exact but he gave her a choice. I have this sneaking suspicion he's retained a good portion of this humanity as well. Guess at this point I can't leave out Jackel. Jackel is set up to be the perfect bad guy. Another of Kanin's creations. Only this one has no soul. Should make for some interesting reading in the next book.

Then came Zeke. Raise mostly by the preacher, Jeb. Zeke is caring, strong , passionate, someone who take the ills of the world all on their shoulders. I loved him almost instantly. Jeb I could never make my mind up about him. Even as the book lies finished, I still can't decide how I feel about him. Caleb oh my goodness this little boy stole my heart. There are a few more characters floating around but out of this bunch, Caleb was my favorite. Maybe its the mother in me but I just wanted to hold him close and protect him from all the bad.

By far this has been one of my top reads to date this year.

The Taker - A Review

The Taker - Alma Katsu (publisher)

Synopsis:

True love can last an eternity . . . but immortality comes at a price. . . .
On the midnight shift at a hospital in rural Maine, Dr. Luke Findley is expecting another quiet evening of frostbite and the occasional domestic dispute. But the minute Lanore McIlvrae—Lanny—walks into his ER, she changes his life forever. A mysterious woman with a past and plenty of dark secrets, Lanny is unlike anyone Luke has ever met. He is inexplicably drawn to her . . . despite the fact that she is a murder suspect with a police escort. And as she begins to tell her story, a story of enduring love and consummate betrayal that transcends time and mortality, Luke finds himself utterly captivated.
Her impassioned account begins at the turn of the nineteenth century in the same small town of St. Andrew, Maine, back when it was a Puritan settlement. Consumed as a child by her love for the son of the town’s founder, Lanny will do anything to be with him forever. But the price she pays is steep—an immortal bond that chains her to a terrible fate for all eternity. And now, two centuries later, the key to her healing and her salvation lies with Dr. Luke Findley.
Part historical novel, part supernatural page-turner, The Taker is an unforgettable tale about the power of unrequited love not only to elevate and sustain, but also to blind and ultimately destroy, and how each of us is responsible for finding our own path to redemption.

My Thoughts:
Timeless. This is the first word I think of when I think of this book. A love, dare I say, obsession that lasts a lifetime or in this case forever if you're immortal like Lanny is.
This book brings the reader from current time and takes then back to early 1800's and earlier in some spots. The characters are lush, vivid and the author brought each one of them to life with her writing. I found myself drawn into the story she weaved. Seduced is a good word to describe how I was drawn in.
Lanny at times could be annoying. I wanted to shake her when she choose to do some of the things she does. Then again love doesn't always come in clear straight lines and is often times messy. I feel the same pull towards Johnathan that all the females in the book seemed to have even thought my brain new better, I wanted to love him as Lanny does.
Then we've got the Addam's family bunch of Boston. Least that's how I see them in an odd sort of way except only with a twist of deviation. There are no words for how I feel about Adair. I had a wide range of emotions regarding him as the book went on. Yet no matter how I fell about his character, I still feel drawn to him. The other minions were well written too but this book really is all about Lanny, Johnathan and Adair.
I can't forget about Luke. The doctor in St. Andrew's emergency room the night the police bring Lanny in to be checked out to make sure she was physically okay before they charged her with murder. Luke is drawn to Lanny like Lanny is drawn to Johnathan. He's living a quiet life, grieving over the loss of his family to another man and at least in my mind hiding out in St. Andrew.  He's finds himself inexplicably drawn to Lanny and before he knows what he's doing he's helped her escape and running off with her. I'm intrigued to see how he plays into future books and curious to see how this character develops.
In short I found The Taker to be a captivating Gothic tale and I can't wait to read book two!

I should note the book did contain adult themes.

Here's my teaser this week:

When Adair awoke, he found he was still in the physic's bed, the old man lying close in a deathlike slumber.  Adair sat up, feeling peculiar.  It was if everything had changed in his sleep, but he couldn't say precisely how.
